Therapeutic Plasma Apheresis as a Treatment for 35 Severely Ill Children and Adolescents with Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections

Therapeutic Plasma Apheresis as a Treatment

Case studies were retrospectively reviewed for 35 patients with severe symptoms of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS) who were treated with Therapeutic Plasma Apheresis (TPA). The results demonstrate that TPA is both safe and effective for treatment of severely ill children and adolescents with PANDAS and was found to produce dramatic clinical benefits with reported improvements averaging 65% and 78% at six months and long-term, respectively.1
